Brock DeBoer

Brock DeBoer (b. 1985) is an American ceramic sculptor whose work recontextualizes everyday objects, personal artifacts, and symbols of popular culture through meticulously crafted porcelain casts. Drawing on nostalgia, memory, and material history, DeBoer transforms familiar objects into sculptural forms that function almost as contemporary relics, altering their permanence while questioning the cultural and emotional value assigned to the things that surround us. His practice is informed by his Midwestern upbringing as well as the contrasting landscapes of Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, where he currently lives and works. Using an extensive knowledge of ceramic materials and processes, DeBoer combines traditional porcelain techniques with classical cobalt decoration, historical motifs, and highly realistic surface treatments, creating objects that appear suspended between past and present. Born in South Dakota, DeBoer received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute with a concentration in ceramics. Recent exhibitions include Far from Home and Gossamerwith Guy Hepner Editions in New York, Knee High by the 5th of July with Haw Contemporary in Kansas City, and what we’ve got here is a failure to communicate with BBQLA at the Torrance Art Museum in Torrance, California.
