Catherine Howe

Catherine Howe (b. 1959) is an American painter whose richly layered abstractions bring together gestural mark-making, botanical imagery, and luminous, often unconventional materials. Born in upstate New York, Howe draws on sources ranging from Dutch flower painting and botanical illustration to historical decorative arts, transforming these references through an intuitive process in which recognizable forms gradually dissolve into energetic fields of color, gesture, and texture. Her paintings frequently incorporate materials such as metallic leaf, mica, carborundum, and iridescent pigments, allowing their surfaces to shift with changing light and creating a tension between physical materiality and atmospheric illusion. Floral and organic forms recur throughout her work, but rather than functioning as traditional still lifes, they become points of departure for investigations into beauty, memory, sensuality, and the history of painting itself. Howe received her MFA from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1983 and has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally, including presentations at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, MoMA PS1, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Her work has been discussed in publications including The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, The New Yorker, and the Los Angeles Times. Howe lives and works between New York City and the Hudson Valley.
