Caio Fonseca

Caio Fonseca (b. 1959) is an American abstract painter whose lyrical compositions explore the relationships between form, color, rhythm, and spatial balance. Raised in New York City in an artistic family, Fonseca left the United States in 1978 to study painting in Barcelona before establishing a studio in Pietrasanta, Italy, where he developed the visual language that would come to define his practice. His paintings and works on paper are built through carefully calibrated relationships between geometric and organic forms, openings, curves, lines, and fields of color, with each element altering the way the surrounding composition is perceived. A lifelong pianist with a deep interest in musical composition, Fonseca has frequently drawn parallels between painting and music, particularly in his attention to interval, rhythm, variation, and resolution. This musical sensibility contributes to the sense of movement within his work, where forms appear to shift, respond, and resolve across the surface. Fonseca has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally, and his work is held in major public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. He divides his time between New York City and Pietrasanta, Italy.
