Katherine Bernhardt

Katherine Bernhardt (b. 1975) is an American contemporary artist known for her energetic, boldly colored paintings and expansive visual vocabulary. Working with a direct and instinctive approach, Bernhardt draws from an eclectic range of imagery, including everyday objects, food, animals, fashion, popular culture, and familiar symbols. Her compositions reject traditional perspective, logical shifts in scale, and atmospheric depth, allowing disparate forms to coexist freely across the canvas. The resulting works are immediate and expressive, driven by loose brushwork, vivid color, and a sense of playful visual association.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Bernhardt received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998 and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2000. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at institutions including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and Lever House in New York, as well as internationally at galleries including Xavier Hufkens in Brussels and Carl Freedman Gallery in London. Her practice has also extended beyond the studio through public murals, large-scale installations, and collaborations across art, music, and design.

Bernhardt lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
