Nicole Wittenberg
Nicole Wittenberg (b. 1979) is an American painter whose work explores the emotional and perceptual possibilities of color, light, landscape, and the human figure. Born in San Francisco, California, Wittenberg received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003 and has developed a practice rooted in direct observation, intuition, and a sustained engagement with the traditions of figurative and landscape painting. Her paintings and works on paper are characterized by vivid color, loose, energetic brushwork, and an immediacy that often begins with drawings and pastel studies made from life. In recent years, landscapes, gardens, flowers, and trees have become increasingly central to her work, with plein-air studies serving as the foundation for larger oil paintings that transform fleeting experiences of light and nature into immersive, psychologically charged images. Rather than functioning as literal descriptions of place, these works often operate as vessels for memory, mood, and sensation. Wittenberg received the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ John Koch Award in 2012, and her work is held in major public collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Albertina, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the High Museum of Art, the Colby College Museum of Art, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, and the Portland Museum of Art. She lives and works in New York.
