Alicia LaChance
Alicia LaChance (b. 1970) is an American abstract painter whose process-driven works combine dense layers of color, pattern, symbols, and material to explore the visual languages shared across cultures and histories. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, LaChance is a self-taught artist whose background in design continues to inform the structure and graphic complexity of her compositions. Working with materials including acrylic, casein, latex, spray paint, powdered pigments, and fresco-secco grounds, she builds and erodes her surfaces through brushwork, silkscreen, taping, staining, scraping, and sanding, creating paintings that feel simultaneously archaeological and distinctly contemporary. LaChance draws from a wide range of sources, including ancient ornament, folk traditions, architecture, street art, botanical forms, and data visualization, often using graphs and diagrams as underlying compositional frameworks. Repeated colors, marks, and symbols accumulate into a personal visual vocabulary that suggests the possibility of a shared or universal language while reflecting the complexity and accelerated pace of contemporary life. Her paintings move between flatness and depth, order and chaos, with layered forms that can evoke maps, urban environments, natural systems, and psychological landscapes. LaChance has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work has been included in exhibitions at institutions including the Elmhurst Art Museum and the Saint Louis Art Museum. She lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri.
