Robert Kelly

Robert Kelly (b. 1956) is an American abstract artist known for geometric paintings and works on paper that combine collage, printmaking, and layered surface construction. Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Kelly earned his BA from Harvard University in 1978 and has developed a practice shaped by sustained engagement with art history, architecture, systems, and the visual cultures encountered through extensive travel. His compositions are built through processes of cutting, layering, mirroring, and repetition, often incorporating fragments of printed material beneath painted surfaces to create subtle tensions between order and disruption. Kelly frequently explores ideas of doubleness, symmetry, opposition, and reflection, using paired or related forms to create compositions that feel both structured and dynamic. Although rooted in the formal vocabulary of Post-Minimalist abstraction, his work carries traces of historical and cultural references gathered from a wide range of sources, allowing geometry to function not simply as design but as a means of organizing memory, place, and visual experience. His work is held in major public and private collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. Kelly lives and works in New York.
