Alex Katz
Alex Katz (b. 1927) is an American painter celebrated for his distinctive approach to portraiture and landscape, characterized by flattened forms, crisp contours, bold color, and a striking economy of detail. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Katz studied at The Cooper Union from 1946 to 1949 before attending the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, where painting directly from life became a formative part of his practice. Emerging in the 1950s at the height of Abstract Expressionism, Katz developed a highly individual form of representational painting that resisted the dominant styles of the period and anticipated aspects of Pop Art without fully belonging to it. By the late 1950s and 1960s, he had established many of the elements now associated with his work, including monumental scale, monochromatic backgrounds, dramatic cropping, and simplified figures drawn from his immediate circle, particularly his wife and longtime muse, Ada. Alongside portraiture, Katz has continually returned to landscapes, flowers, and scenes of everyday life, using light, color, and surface to capture fleeting visual impressions with remarkable clarity. Over more than seven decades, he has worked across painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, developing one of the most recognizable visual languages in postwar American art. His work is held in major museum collections worldwide, and he remains a central figure in the history of contemporary figurative painting.
