Deborah Kass
Deborah Kass (b. 1952) is an American artist whose work explores the intersections of art history, popular culture, politics, gender, and personal identity. Working across painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and neon, Kass is known for appropriating and recontextualizing the visual languages of influential twentieth-century artists, using familiar styles as a means of questioning authorship, cultural authority, and the historically male-dominated narratives of modern art. Her acclaimed The Warhol Project, begun in the early 1990s, adopted Andy Warhol’s strategies of repetition and celebrity portraiture while replacing his familiar subjects with figures significant to Kass’s own cultural and artistic history, including prominent women and Jewish icons. Across subsequent bodies of work, she has incorporated Broadway lyrics, popular songs, film quotations, Yiddish expressions, and political language into compositions that reference artists including Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Jackson Pollock, and Ed Ruscha. Humor, nostalgia, and autobiography frequently coexist with pointed feminist and political critique, allowing Kass to examine how cultural identity is constructed and represented. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections including The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery. Kass lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
