Archie Scott Gobber
Archie Scott Gobber (b. 1965) is an American painter and sculptor known for transforming familiar words, phrases, signs, and symbols into incisive works that explore culture, politics, identity, and belief. Born in Warrensburg, Missouri, and based in Kansas City, Gobber draws from the visual language of advertising, political campaigns, popular culture, and everyday speech, recontextualizing slogans, clichés, and recognizable imagery to expose ambiguity, contradiction, and shifting meaning. His work often pairs humor and wordplay with formal precision, allowing seemingly simple phrases or images to operate simultaneously as visual objects and cultural commentary. Moving between painting, works on paper, sculpture, and public art, Gobber continually examines the relationship between text and image and the ways language can shape perception. He received his BFA in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1988 and was awarded a Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award in 1998. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in museum and public collections including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Spencer Museum of Art. Gobber lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri.
