Donald Sultan
Donald Sultan (b. 1951) is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for reimagining the still-life tradition through bold, simplified forms and unconventional industrial materials. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, Sultan rose to prominence in the late 1970s as part of the New Image movement and has since developed a distinctive practice that moves between abstraction and representation. Rather than working solely with traditional paint and canvas, he incorporates materials such as roofing tar, enamel, linoleum, aluminum, and spackle, building, gouging, sanding, and polishing his surfaces to create works with both physical weight and striking graphic clarity. Flowers, fruit, everyday objects, and industrial landscapes recur throughout his work, their recognizable silhouettes often reduced to monumental forms that challenge conventional associations of delicacy, beauty, and permanence. In his celebrated Disaster Paintingsof the 1980s, Sultan turned to images of industrial accidents and catastrophes drawn from newspapers, using heavy materials to explore the unexpected fragility of man-made structures. Sultan earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to New York in 1975. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections including The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
