Kenny Scharf
Kenny Scharf (b. 1958) is an American artist whose exuberant paintings, sculptures, installations, and public works fuse the visual languages of graffiti, Pop Art, science fiction, and animation. Born in Hollywood, California, Scharf moved to New York and earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1980, becoming a central figure in the downtown art scene that also included artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Drawing from the cartoons and futuristic imagery he grew up with, including The Flintstones and The Jetsons, Scharf developed a distinctive universe of brightly colored characters, biomorphic forms, cosmic landscapes, and exaggerated expressions that blur the boundaries between fine art and popular culture. His work often combines humor and visual pleasure with darker undertones, reflecting anxieties surrounding technology, consumer culture, environmental destruction, and the future. Across murals, paintings, sculptures, and immersive environments, Scharf has consistently embraced accessibility and spectacle, bringing art beyond traditional gallery spaces and into the public realm. His practice remains rooted in the belief that imagery associated with cartoons, advertising, and street culture can carry the same cultural and emotional weight as more conventional forms of fine art. Scharf continues to live and work in Los Angeles and New York.
