Julie Miller Torres
Julie Miller Torres (b. 1971) is an American artist whose practice brings together printmaking, painting, weaving, and fiber-based techniques to explore identity, equality, freedom, and the systems that shape contemporary life. Born in Boise, Idaho, and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, Torres began her professional career in law before turning to art, earning a BFA in Printmaking from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2016 after previously receiving a BA and JD from the University of Florida and an LLM from the University of Miami. She is best known for her intricate woven screenprint works, in which printed images and patterns are cut, interlaced, and reconstructed into richly layered compositions that merge the precision of printmaking with the tactile traditions of weaving and textile production. Her work frequently draws on American history, cultural symbols, and portraits of trailblazing women, using familiar imagery to examine representation, empowerment, and the relationship between individual identity and larger social structures. Her legal background continues to inform the conceptual foundations of her practice, particularly her interest in systems, rules, equality, and the tension between order and disruption. Torres’s work is held in public and private collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, SCAD, and numerous corporate collections. She lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.
