Petra Rös-Nickel
Petra Rös-Nickel (b. 1963) is a German abstract painter whose richly layered compositions explore color, rhythm, surface, and spatial perception. Born in Wathlingen near Celle, Germany, Rös-Nickel first studied fashion design in Bremen before turning to architecture in Eckernförde, experiences that continue to inform the structural clarity and sensitivity to pattern evident throughout her work. Favoring the creative possibilities of design over its technical constraints, she gradually developed a distinctive painting practice rooted in both construction and intuition. Her compositions can be loosely grouped into recurring visual languages she describes as “patchwork,” “windows,” and “oscillating lines,” each reflecting a different approach to organizing color and form while maintaining a cohesive sense of movement and balance. Working through both additive and reductive processes, Rös-Nickel repeatedly builds, scrapes, rubs, and removes layers of oil paint, allowing passages of color to shift between foreground and background and challenging the viewer’s perception of depth. Large fields of closely related hues are interrupted by lines, overlapping planes, and traces of earlier layers, creating surfaces that feel simultaneously architectural and atmospheric. Through this interplay of structure, texture, and color, Rös-Nickel creates paintings with a strong physical presence that balance energetic movement with moments of contemplation.
