Ugo Rondinone
Ugo Rondinone (b. 1964) is a Swiss contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, video, sound, and large-scale installation. Born in Brunnen, Switzerland, Rondinone creates poetic and psychologically charged works that explore time, nature, solitude, desire, and the rhythms of everyday life. His visual language moves fluidly between monumental stone figures, fluorescent rainbow signs, circular target paintings, landscapes, animals, and celestial imagery, often combining archetypal forms with the visual immediacy of advertising and popular culture. Despite the wide range of media and imagery he employs, his work is united by an interest in contemplation and the emotional experience of being present, with repetition, ritual, and cycles of nature frequently serving as organizing principles. Rondinone studied at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna before moving to New York in 1997, where he established his international practice. He represented Switzerland at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and has since presented major exhibitions and public installations around the world. His work is held in prominent museum collections internationally, and his large-scale projects have become especially recognized for transforming public spaces into immersive encounters with color, form, and landscape. Rondinone lives and works in New York.
