Alberto Murillo
Alberto Murillo (b. 1974) is a Spanish-born abstract painter whose work explores color, movement, surface, and the emotional associations of place. Originally from Madrid, Murillo began his creative career in interior design before turning fully to painting, a background that continues to inform the balance, structure, and spatial clarity of his compositions. Working primarily with acrylic and polymer emulsions, he pours and manipulates pigment across horizontal surfaces, pushing and pulling the material into concentrated fields of color before sealing the compositions beneath layers of resin. The resulting works possess a luminous, highly finished surface while retaining the spontaneity and physical energy associated with Abstract Expressionism. His compositions are often informed by architecture, landscape, and memories of Spain and Latin America, moving between atmospheric abstraction and more graphic references to contemporary culture. While Murillo cites influences ranging from Abstract Expressionism to artists such as Andy Warhol and Edward Hopper, his practice is distinguished by the tension between fluid gesture and controlled composition, creating works that feel simultaneously immediate and carefully constructed. His paintings have been exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe and are held in numerous private and corporate collections. Murillo lives and works in New York City.
