Jonny Niesche
Jonny Niesche (b. 1972) is an Australian artist whose luminous abstractions blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and installation. Born and based in Sydney, Niesche creates what he calls “image-objects,” using voile, dye sublimation, mirrored and reflective surfaces, glitter, and digitally generated color palettes to produce works that shift in appearance according to light, space, and the viewer’s position. Drawing from the formal language of Minimalism while embracing the theatricality and visual excess of glam rock, his work combines precise geometric structures with radiant gradients, reflective materials, and intensely saturated color. Rather than treating a painting as a fixed image, Niesche approaches it as a perceptual experience, allowing color, reflection, and surrounding architecture to become active components of the work. His compositions move between objecthood and illusion, creating environments in which surfaces appear to glow, dissolve, or extend beyond their physical boundaries. Niesche studied at Sydney College of the Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and his work has been exhibited internationally throughout Australia, Europe, Asia, and the United States. His work is held in major Australian public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Niesche lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
