Esteban Ocampo-Giraldo

Esteban Ocampo-Giraldo (b. 1987) is a Colombian painter whose work explores memory, family, intimacy, and the emotional residue of everyday life. Born in Manizales, Colombia, Ocampo-Giraldo creates figurative paintings drawn largely from recollection rather than direct photographic reference, allowing individual moments to become compressed, altered, and reimagined through the act of painting. His compositions often employ unusual viewpoints, dramatic cropping, and a first-person perspective that places the viewer inside scenes of kinship, humor, connection, and loss. Rather than treating these images as strictly autobiographical, Ocampo-Giraldo seeks to make them open enough for viewers to recognize something of their own experiences within them. Alongside these domestic and narrative works, he has developed an ongoing body of swimming pool paintings that function as unconventional portraits of family life and place. Imagined from a bird’s-eye view rather than derived from drone photography, the pools and surrounding backyards become reconstructed environments shaped by memory, nostalgia, and invention. Ocampo-Giraldo received his MFA from the New York Academy of Art, where he was later selected as a Chubb Fellow, before returning to Colombia. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in prominent private collections, including the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection.
