Mr. Brainwash
Mr. Brainwash (b. 1966), born Thierry Guetta, is a French-born contemporary artist known for a high-energy visual language that merges street art, Pop imagery, graffiti, and cultural appropriation. Drawing from advertising, music, celebrity culture, and art history, he layers recognizable icons, slogans, spray-painted gestures, and graphic motifs into exuberant compositions that blur the boundaries between fine art and popular culture. Guetta first became widely known through Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, which chronicles his transformation from an obsessive documentarian of the street art movement into the artist Mr. Brainwash and helped propel his work onto an international stage. Since then, he has developed a practice centered on optimism, spectacle, and accessibility, frequently incorporating phrases such as “Life Is Beautiful” and “Love Is the Answer” into paintings, sculptures, murals, and immersive installations. His work combines imagery drawn from figures including Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein with references to artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Banksy, reworking familiar cultural symbols through layers of paint, collage, stencil, and text. Mr. Brainwash has also collaborated across music, fashion, film, and popular culture, including creating album artwork for Madonna and Rick Ross, while his work has appeared in television and film productions and large-scale public projects. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
